One thing I have wanted to do is an in game blog, updated as much as possible. So family permitting I will give it a shot.

Calgary Flames
vs.

St. Lois Blues
Pregame
The Blues enter tonight’s game looking to repeat a performance that took over 25 years to achieve. The Blues need to journey to Western Canada to sweep a very difficult road trip.
The Blues will be without the services of David Backes and Carlo Colaiacovo. Tyson Strachan was recalled, but will sit out tonight’s game. TJ Oshie will stay between Paul Kariya and Brad Boyes on the top line. The line up remains the same, save for Ty Conklin manning the net this evening.
Kariya-Oshie-Boyes
McDonald-Tkachuk-Perron
Steen-McClement-Crombeen
Winchester-Berglund-Janssen
Jackman-Polak
Brewer-Johnson
Sydor-Weaver
Scratches:
Backes (Upper Body)
Colaiacovo (Lower Body)
Strachan (Healthy)
King (Conditioning in Peoria)
The Blues have a chance to go just four points back of Calgary who currently hold the 8th spot in the West.
First Period
- Nice early pace to the game. Nice seeing EJ jump in the play. Nice fight w/ Bam Bam and McGratton. He just gets better as the fight moves on.
- After great work by Oshie and the McClement line Steen takes a lazy offensive zone penalty. Almost turned in to a goal right off the draw.
- Excellent chance by Kariya short handed by using his great speed.
- Both teams are skating well and making quick puck decisions. It’s leading to chances. This could be a high scoring affair or a goaltending duel.
- Another solid shift for Oshie and his dynamic offensive zone play. Followed up by a solid overall effort from the Tkachuk line.
- Chances given up to the Flames are really just from Iginla. If the game pa out that way the Blues have a good shot at a clean two points. Hard to stop Jarome.
- Crazy furry in front doesn’t end in Flames goal. Dedication to clogging up the scoring area did the job.
- Weaver with a good period so far.
- Blues to the power play late in the period. A goal would be nice.
- Holy Jumpin’ Brad Winchester diving tip off a Boyes feed.
- Brewer has lost the ability to get pucks on net again. Then again, few shots from the point made it on net.
- Blues outshoot the Flames 9-7 in the first and split the 16 faceoffs. Flames out hit the Blues 7-6. Flames have 7 giveaways to the Blues 3.
Second Period
- Who said EJ isn’t confident? Great play at the opening of he period to buildup speed and get protection behind the net toge the puck out of the zone.
- Another fight for Cam and this time its a clean win on Prust. Nice hit on Jay Bouwmeester lead to Prust jumping in. Not quite sure why.
- Not impressed with Berglund in any shift I’ve seen him in. Not showing much physical strength and at times looked out of sync.
- Kariya, Oshie, McDonald – Easily the three best Blues forwards so far.
- Conklin is solid so far. Doing his job to keep his road team in it.
- This could be a very important power play. Only three calls in 30 minutes of play. Good road teams make it happen. Blues just cant get entry in to the zone. Which leads to Berglund twisting in his own zone coughing up the puck.
- Have to like the physical play and the Blues getting forwards deep helping on D. They just can’t get sustained pressure this period.
- Mikka makes a BIG save on Walt from a nice feed by McDonald. No rebound sadly. Great play by the Flames bet minder.
- Cam Janssen with more positive impact than Berglund so far. Berglund on the ice for a little over 7 minutes…Janssen 1:15.
- The Blues have done a good job of picking when to jump in, but that was not so hot on Polak’s part on the Iginla odd man rush. After Boyes gets the puck in, it wasn’t the most well advised pass.
- THAT IS HOW YOU DO IT PATRIK! Get that puck and shoot it ! Good things happen. Now get your butt and feet moving and close this game out on a positive note.
- Berglund’s 1st goal in14 games assisted by Johnson. Late period goals are back breakers and confidence boosters. Thanfully the Blues are in the confidence boosting side.
- Blues and Flames both have 12 shots in the period, Blues lead 21-19 overall. Blues are 20 for 36 (55.5%). Calgary has 12 giveaways to the Blues 5.
Third Period
- Nice chances opening the period by the Flames. Good job by the Blues for the most part tying up Flames players.
- Lazy penalties in the third is just bad mojo guys. The Flames are shortening their bench and throwing everything but the kitchen sink at the Blues. Need a kill and then take back the momentum.
- Great save by Conklin. Gotta love Brewer getting up on Rene Bourque. Yeah Randy Karriker…he is useless. I think his hockey opinion us useless.
- Maybe I’m the useless one…Brewer can’t keep it in and EJ drops down to bail him out on the 2-on-1.
- Blues slowly turning the momentum their way?
- Oh yea, they did. Great work by the Tkachuk line. Blues up 2-0 on Perron’s 15th of the season from McDonald and Sydor. All starts with the Oshie effort and the Tkachuk faceoff win. FYI – Tkachuk is 8 for 15 on the draws, he has some key wins tonight.
- Perron didn’t do a ton tonight. However, he didn’t hurt the team effort before he got in great position to score a goal scorers goal.
- That’s a winner folks. What a great third. They absorb the early period rush and really beat back the Flames.
Recap
What a big win for the Blues as they muddy the mess down around the 8th spot in the West.
Conklin has to be the player of the game with his third Shutout of the season. TJ Oshie with a close second for possibly his best game where he didn’t register a point.
Even though he power play failed to convert, Berglund made good use of his one good play and scored the game winner late in the second period.
The Blues were outshot 34 to 29 overall and 15 to 8 in the third period, but dida good job of absorbing pressure and then applying their own.
Oshie, Boyes, and Kariya all played over 20 minutes and were highly effective in all three zones. Yes, Boyes played 2o minutes and played pretty well.
Calgary just couldn’t manage the puck well enough, 16 giveaways lead to many Blues chances. Blues also had 14 takeaways. That is roughly 30 turnovers by the Flames, at home, well rested.
I was impressed by the Blues attention to detail. Getting players back to defend, chipping pucks to open space, clogging passing lanes, board support. The Blues worked very well as a 5 man unit.
By that attention to detail the Blues were able to stem the tide of the Flames onslaught in the third. Calgary came out swinging and the Blues came right back. The answering tone, pace, and effort was present in this game…which was the lacking element Saturday night.
The Blues start off the road trip right and are now F-O-U-R points back of the 8th seed in the Western Conference. There is a lot of hockey left, but this team is trending up under Davis Payne. Next up is Vancouver Wednesday night.
