The St. Louis Blues don’t have much high end depth around their prospect defensemen these days. They remedied that tonight.
From the official team website:
PITTSBURGH – The St. Louis Blues selected defenseman Jordan Schmaltz with the 25th overall selection in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
Schmaltz, 18, split last season between the United States Hockey League’s (USHL) Green Bay Gamblers and Sioux City Musketeers, ranking second among USHL defensemen with 41 points (10 goals, 31 assists) in 55 games.
The 6’2”, 189-pound defenseman was ranked 34th among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting and he will attend the University of North Dakota in the fall.
I could tell you that the kid is a gift skater who can move the puck very well and run a power play, but I’ll let Schmaltz and Blues director of scouting director Bill Armstrong tell you.

What do you think Blues fans? Yay or nay? I’m always going to throw my chip in the yay bucket for an offensive defenseman. It’s my soft spot.
