Throwdown Lowdown – Hurricanes @ Blues 10-21-11

Chara Kills Harrison

Well, what is there to be said about the lackluster effort the St. Louis Blues put forth in Tuesday’s 5-0 loss to the Los Angeles Kings? Not much, really, especially considering there were no fights in the contest and no point where a fight really would have made sense for either side. The Blues hold still at two fighting majors on the season, good for a massive share of 16th place on this still-young National Hockey League season amongst teams in that category. And, yes, the fight record still stands at 1-0-1.

If you’re looking for a fight, you’re not likely to get it from the Blues’ next opponent, the Carolina Hurricanes. That being said, there is a recent history between the two squads regarding fisticuffs, and the ‘Canes are coming off a game where, veritably, all hell broke loose as far as personal discipline was concerned. The ‘Canes also possess two descendents of hockey’s famous Sutter family (both nephews of former Blues Brian, Rich and Ron Sutter). So, really, anything goes here. Last season, Carolina finished 25th in the NHL with 25 fights (funny how that worked out, eh?) on the season, and their fight record was pretty brutal, actually – 3-13-9. This season, the ‘Canes are 0-3-0 in three fights on the season, and the three fights put the team in a large share for 10th in the NHL in that category.

This year’s three fighters for Carolina include one of the aforementioned Sutters, Brett (6’0”, 200lbs, Loss) as well as Jay Harrison (6’4”, 211lbs, Loss) and Tim Gleason (6’0”, 217lbs, Loss). Current ‘Canes and their fight cards from last year include Harrison (0-3-3 including a loss to BJ Crombeen) with six fights, former Panther Bryan Allen (6’5”, 226lbs, 1-2-1 including a draw with Crombeen) with four fights and Gleason (1-1-0) with two fights. Solo fighters include Chris Stewart’s older brother, Anthony (6’3”, 230lbs, Win), former Maple Leaf Tim Brent (6’0”, 188lbs, Draw), Chad LaRose (5’10”, 188lbs, Loss) and another of the aforementioned Sutters, Brandon (6’3”, 183lbs, Loss).

Being that Crombeen is out, the pickings are slim as far as a true chance for a fight is concerned in this game. But wouldn’t it be funny if the Stewart Brothers got into a scrape? It would be hilarious, and probably a good bout as they are about the same size. I’d love to see it, but it’s very doubtful.

One home game, and all I want is a better effort from the Blues. Can you do that for me, please? Thanks.

LET’S GO BLUES!!!!!
