Hockey Fights Cancer Month- Part 4: The Zero Campaign to End Prostate Cancer: Updated
Hockey Fights cancer has partnered with 4 different charities as the main benefactors of Hockey Fights Cancer Month. One of these groups is the Zero: The Project to End Prostate Cancer.
The Zero Project is a group that funds research and screening so that one day prostate cancer will be an obsolete health concern. They provide free PSA screening to men, and help to find prostate cancer in its earliest stages, when it is easily cured. The group also helps to fund clinical trials to find new treatments for prostate cancer. So far, over 100,000 men have had free screenings through Zero.
According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. Risk factors can vary from person to person, but the highest risk factor is age. Smoking also greatly increases a man’s risk of prostate cancer. Do you know your risk? Check out the PCF here to find out your level of risk.
On October 25, 2011 from 7 am – 4 pm, the St. Louis Blues will be joining with Zero to hold a “Drive Against Prostate Cancer” event at Scottrade center. According to the Blues press release, the “Drive Against Prostate Cancer is the only nationwide mobile prostate cancer testing program.” The free screenings are available to all men. The screenings will include a “simple physical exam” and a PSA blood test . No appointments are required. The early, easily curable stages of prostate cancer have no physical symptoms, so screening is extremely important to catch the disease early.
The first 100 men to be screened at Scottrade will get a free ticket to the November 17th Blues game against the Panthers. All participants will get a special ticket offer and be entered to win prizes. In addition, Frank Cusumano and Martin Kilcoyne will be broadcasting live on 590 KFNS The Fan from the event from 10am-1pm.
During October, men’s health issues often take a back burner to breast cancer awareness. Male Blues fans should consider heading out to Scottrade to take their health into their own hands, and get screened on the 25th.
