Hockey Fights Cancer Month- Part 3: Pink at the Rink October 21st

October is not only Hockey Fights Cancer Month.   It is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  The plethora of pink ribbon products has hit stores, and the Blues are honoring the cause in their annual Pink at the Rink Hockey Fights Cancer Night.

On October 21st, a sea of pink will hit Scottrade Center as the Blues face the Carolina Hurricanes.  Fans can purchase special tickets in a “pink out” section for the game.  These tickets include a special edition “Pink at the Rink” shirt, and each ticket gives $5 back to St. Louis Komen for the Cure affiliate.  In addition, fans can donate to Komen for the Cure by purchasing Blues pink ribbon pins for $5 and commemorative autographed pink pucks (presumably $30, but price isn’t listed on the Blues site), or bidding on items in a silent auction.

During the game, the Blues will honor breast cancer survivors.  They will also have the banner from Race for the Cure hanging behind the Blues bench- good luck finding where you signed!  At this year’s Race for the Cure, the Blues and FSMW had 2,550 team members that raised more than $80,000 for the fight against breast cancer.  Here at BNZ, we sold enough t-shirts to donate $463.  We hope to beat that total for the 2012 Race for the Cure (June 23, 2012).

The BlueNoteZone supports the cause of fighting breast cancer, because some of our authors have a personal connection to the disease, just as many people around the world do.  Breast cancer is a disease that affects approximately 1 in 8 women in the United States.  Those rates increase dramatically in families with genetic mutations that make both women and men more susceptible to breast cancer.  My family is one of those families.  My mother is currently undergoing treatment for her third occurrence of breast cancer.  My grandmother has battle the disease twice- and is still going strong in her 70s.  Personally, I don’t want to ever be known as a breast cancer survivor.  This spring, I had preventative surgery to significantly reduce my risk of getting breast cancer in my lifetime- I now have about a 2% chance of getting the disease, which is less than the average woman who has about an 8% chance.  I support the cause to find a cure for those fighting the fight, but also for those in the next generation, like my daughter.  I believe a world where breast cancer isn’t a feared killer is possible, so I support the cause to find a cure.

Please join us at Pink at the Rink this Friday if you can.  It’s a great cause to have a good time at a Blues game for!

I'm a stay at home mom of a little hockey nut who started watching hockey in 2008. I love the pace of the game, the rough and tumble hits and fights, and, of course, the good looking and talented players.
