Throwdown Lowdown – Blues @ Red Wings – 12-15-10

The Carolina Hurricanes made a fool out of me in two ways on Saturday. For one thing, they defeated the Blues 2-1 in a shootout. The other thing that happened? AN HONEST-TO-GOD FIGHT! If you read my report from Saturday, you’ll know I was stunned to learn of this development. The combatants were Jay Harrison and BJ Crombeen, and in a noted spin-cycle fight, the decision was given to Beej as he landed a big left jab and a HUGE right cross to finish this bout. Take a look at those proceedings here. This brings The Note to an even, round 30 fighting majors on the season – good for third place all alone in the NHL standings for this category – and a season fight record to a lovely-looking 16-7-7. Well done, Blues!
I’m going to drop the pretense here and not say much. See, I’ve reviewed the lack of fighting prowess of these hated Detroit Red Wings previously. At that time, the Wings had fought six times on the season – good for 22nd in the league, with a dreadful 0-3-3 fight record. Well, they have fought a grand total of ONCE since then – a bout this past Saturday that Jonathan Ericsson lost (bringing his personal season fighting record to 0-2-0). Their seven fights ties them with the Florida Panthers and Nashville Predators for 27th in the league. And obviously, the loss brings the Wings fight record to 0-4-3. Pathetic! My preview from November 17th still stands otherwise, so click on the link in this paragraph for more. Ericsson is pictured above, trying not to get killed by – of all people – Gilbert Brule.
Every time I say not to anticipate a fight, it seems there IS one. So I don’t anticipate a fight in this one. But if you’re looking for odd sparring partners? I might be able to help. I would LOVE to see Barret Jackman face Tomas Holmstrom. It would make my evening. But we’ll see what happens.
I REALLY do not like the Chicago Blackhawks, but I also really do not like the Detroit Red Wings. Can our beloved Blues dish out a dual beat-down – both with fists and with goals? Hey, the Kings shut these guys out!
LET’S GO BLUES!!!!!
