Throwdown Lowdown – Blues @ Rangers – 11-07-10

First, my apologies for the lateness of today’s Throwdown Lowdown report.  I got a bit carried away celebrating my high school’s 2nd Round IHSA football win (GO BULLDOGS!).  Then, I had to go out of town to take care of some house business this morning.  So . . . uhhh, whoops!  Not exactly great excuses, but excuses nonetheless.

Yesterday’s Blues 2-1 shootout victory over the Boston Bruins was a bit of a chippy affair.  In all, two fights were contested – one involving David Backes and Andrew Ference, ending in what has been adjudged to be a draw.  The other was between BJ Crombeen and Mark Stuart, which was judged to be a win for Stuart (and I concur).  This brings the Blues to 13 fights on the season – tied for fourth in the NHL with the Calgary Flames – and a 6-3-4 record in those fights.  Click the opponent’s name for video of the fights.

The New York Rangers, for a team with the likes of Derek Boogaard and Brandon Prust, sure don’t fight too much – at least this year anyway.  They are currently tied for 14th in the NHL with nine fights on the season, drawn with the Ottawa Senators.  Part of the reason behind this may be that no one WANTS to fight them, due to those two players’ presence on the roster sheet.  It’s possible, but you know me . . . not fighting is inexcusable with those two!  Their record in those nine fights is actually pretty good – 5-1-3.

Prust (6’2”, 192lbs, 3-0-2) and Boogaard (6’7”, 265lbs, 2-0-1) have been doing their part.  The other fight was contested by NHL SuperPest Sean Avery (5’10”, 195lbs, the Rangers’ lone loss).

It was encouraging to see Cam Janssen back out there last night.  With the roster being a bit shorthanded, I wonder if he’ll be in there for a second night in a row.  I sure hope so!  If he does play, he has a past history with Prust (and has defeated him), so look for those two to hook up.  If Brad Winchester plays, he’d be about the only one I’d like to see against Boogaard, but Boogaard would probably destroy him anyway.

The short trip down I-95 has been made, and now it’s time for the Blues to work again.  They can sweep the East Coast back-to-back, and hopefully they will.

LET’S GO BLUES!!!!!
