Cole & Pietrangelo
The recent discussion regarding Ian Cole’s and Alex Pietrangelo’s respective training camp performances and future roster destination has been interesting to say the least. The two highly anticipated first round picks have been fighting for the two openings on the blueline. Speculation points to only one of the two appearing on the NHL roster October 9th.
Most of have seen the two play this preseason have said, with good reason, that Ian has out performed Alex. Yet, Pietrangelo hasn’t hurt himself either. Positives reviews have come his way as well.
The question becomes who will benefit more from 3rd pairing minutes in St. Louis compared to top pairing minutes in Peoria. The case can be made for both scenarios for both players. It’s a difficult position to be in, but it’s a very good problem to have.
Is the debate worth getting worked up about? No, it’s not. Either they will earn their keep or be sent down. The Blues have that luxury.
Should trips to Peoria send up red flags? No. Ask Duncan Keith about his AHL career. Helped to make him the Norris Trophy and Stanley Cup winner he is today. Both Ian and Alex would develop perfectly fine there.
Fans want more of the youth movement. I get it. However, teams that win often and for a long time don’t handout roster spots.
