Wednesday Wonderings #2
Well Blues fans…here we sit, February 3rd and the Blues are Five Points behind the 8th place Red Wings. Seven Points separate 7th place Nashville and the 13th place Blues. Does this team have a realistic shot? We will soon see after the next seven games to clouse out the season before the Olympic break.
- Why does Eric Brewer have more goals scored than Erik Johnson? Brewer has 5 Goals in 32 Games and Johnson has 4 Goals in 53 Games. Most likely because Brewer just gets the puck at the net. Something Johnson has not done well once the play is set up in the offensive zone. A booming slapshot is nice, but you need a quick snap shot to keep the winger covering you honest. Johnson could do well to watch some video of Gonchar and Green.
- Is there a more underrated defensive pairing in the NHL than Barret Jackman and Roman Polak. Through 99 combined games the two have 5 Goals, 21 Assists, a Plus-12 Rating, and play against the other teams top line each night. Erik Johnson, Brad Winchester, and Daryl Sydor are the only other players above Even while appearing in at least 50% of the teams games to date. You have to combine those three to reach the Plus-6 that both Jackman and Polak have. Few points and the highest Plus/Minus on the team is a testimony to their level of play.
- Can Chris Mason come up with another run where he stands on his head for months on end? Can the Blues score enough to give Mason a chance to do it?
- People question the maturity of the Blues younger players. Did anyone see that David Perron will send $1 for every new Twitter follower he gets this month? It’s not a huge gesture, but an open ended on not most young people would get involved in when they have so many other things to handle. Kudos to David. Follow him @DP_57.
- Who is this Sidney Crosby and where did the pass first gut go? I don’t know, but this new and improved Sid is more dangerous than ever.

February = playoff litmus test for this team. If they go above .600-.625 they have a shot. Anything less means they just won’t have ‘it’ to make it.
Great analysis on Brewer. I’m not a ‘Brewer hater’ because I think the guy’s got guts to come back and play in the NHL after you’ve lost feeling in one of your legs. I think when you miss one year of hockey after you turn 30 it will take a season to regain your stride (see Kariya on this one). Nice to see our ‘minus’ leader at least scoring here and there.
EJ’s forced development is grating on all of us. Add a missed year and I think it’s going to take another season for him to begin to show enormous potential. On the flip side, does this help our chances of a long-term contract at fewer $$$?
