Vancouver Canucks
vs.

St. Lois Blues
Pregame
After a solid road win in Calgary Monday night the Blues have another opportunity to go in to Vancouver and beat a hot Canucks team. One of the best road teams in the West vs. maybe the hottest home team. Coming in to tonight’s action the Blues are 5 pints back of 8th place Detroit (59 points).
David Backes rejoins the line up at the expense of Cam Janssen. Tyson Strachan is the other healthy scratch. Per Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post Dispatch the lines-up should look like:
Kariya-Oshie-Boyes
McDonald-Tkachuk-Perron
Steen-McClement-Backes
Winchester-Berglund-Crombeen
Jackman-Polak
Brewer-Johnson
Sydor-Weaver
Ty Conklin makes his second consecutive start after earning his 3rd Shutout Monday.
There are interesting story lines to this game. The previous history with the teams in the last 8 or so months on top of the Canucks recent courting (allegedly though Vancouver media outlets). It was nice to see JD fire back and basically say “lay off Backes”. He even said he is a likely future Captain.
Auger v Burrows won’t go away…now Vancouver won’t talk to Hockey Night in Canada/CBC. Apparently there is a true in place. No matter what, the Canucks are building a reputation for being a little immature the last few seasons. From talking about player’s wives to challenging the professionalism of a referee. Amazing how it all ties in to Burrows? He is the west coast version of Scott Hartnell.
Can TJ Oshie get Bobby Lou for another highlight reel goal? Can Jackman take on two Sedin’s at once again? That’s about the 38 second mark.
There is a great rivalry budding between these two teams. With Vancouver surging and the Blues trending up…the sparks are sure to continue.
First Period
- Canucks have good early pressure from all lines. Thank you fora lazy delay of game. Early power play chance.
- Yes, that looks like five forwards on the ice…interesting.
- What a play. Great power play movement and what a play by Perron, McDonald and old man Tkachuk. Blues up 1-0.
- Excellent work by Winchester-Berglund-Backes line as Payne plays mix and match.
- Sadly the Canucks jump right on the Blues right after the nice shift. Nice play by Kesler and Raymond. Tied up 1-1. Perron follows up a nice offensive play with a not so nice defensive one. Has to be a better pass there. Too often Perron slows the play down or loses the puck at his own blue line.
- Nice pick off by Backes, he didn’t get it deep, but the Blues get another free power play. More delay of game please.
- I like the idea of Steen and Johnson on the point. Hopefully it works for them. That unit got some shots off, but no real chances. I am not impressed with the five forward power play. Maybe we need Lee Stempniak to make that work?
- Canucks are creating chances. We knew that was going to happen, but they have gotten some good looks on Conklin. At least the Blues seem to have the secondary chances cut off.
- Come on penalty kill, we need you back to form. Won’t be easy with McClement in the box.
- Berglund does too much lateral movement in his own zone for my liking, ends up getting EJ hit. Get that stuff out of the zone Patrik. Have to be careful there BJ, don’t need a 3rd man in….then again EJ vs Rypien…he should have jumped in. Kudos to EJ for sticking up for himself. Time to kill another power play.
- Blues absorb the Vancouver power play who created some chances, but kill another power play.
- Nice step up by EJ on Burrows. Forced them to come 200 ft.
- Nice play by McClement to get a shot. Luongo hasn’t looked so hot, he seemed to fight that shot off. Need some high shots to whiz past Bobby Lou’s head.
- After one period the game is still tied up at 1-1. Vancouver is out shooting the Blues 14-6. Hits are 5-3 Blues. Vancouver has 4 Giveways to the Blues 2. Faceoffs are 8 to 6 for Vancouver. Kudos to Conklin, player of the period.
Second Period
- Lots of cycling leads to one chance, but not much else by the Sedin Line.
- Not impressed with the transition ability of the Berglund line or Sydor-Weaver pairing.
- Great steal and forecheck pressure by Kariya, too bad Boyes shot in to a block instead of tying to make a little drag play.
- Canucks top two lines are as good and solid as any other right now.
- Crombeen with a solid game in his own zone, multiple smart clears.
- Luongo didn’t look so good on that Berglund shot…I’m saying it now, just get all the pucks on net you can.
- Blues are starting to get more pressure in the Canucks zone. They need to keep it up, the Canucks are moving much to quickly out of their own zone.
- Big faceoff win by TJ on the Sedin line. Too bad they couldn’t get it down the ice and keep it there.
- Blues are using many more passes and taking much more time to get the puck out of their zone. Leading to too many “one and done” chances.
- 4-on-4 after matching minors to Bernier and Brewer. I love that Brewer is showing some grit and toughness lately. Have to be careful with the Canucks in this situation.
- Perron has Berglund’s same problem with the puck in his own zone. Too much East/West and not enough North/South. Perron just delays too much in organizing the transition. Bad pass to McClement and it leads to a chance and a defensive zone faceoff.
- Randy Karriker called Brewer useless on the radio this week. I think that opinion is useless. Nice hit by Brewer in the corner. The Sedins do a lot of passing but no many chances on that possession.
- Both Berglund and McClement have come off the off hand wall to get the puck on net. Nice move and shot by Berglund. I’m telling you, Luogno ain’t alright tonight. Get shots on net.
- Nice save by Conklin after the Boyes turnover to Kesler. Not the guy you want to give the puck to. Kesler can play and play well.
- Great plays by Backes and Jackman that shift with the Sedins on the ice.
- Nice play by Berglund to win that puck at center ice with his size. He also got another shot through from that off wing wall. Very nice pressure by that line. As the period has gone on the Blues pressure has ramped up.
- After two periods the score is 1-1. Vancouver has out shot the Blues 22-15, but the Blues out shot the Canucks 9-8 in the period. Blues lead in Hits 7-5. Blues now have 7 giveaways to Vancouver’s 6. Vancouver leads in faceoffs 17-13.
Third Period
- I LOVE the shot by Steen. Got it high and hard right past his head. Now get the puck back and bang pucks at him.
- Raymond’s second of the game puts Vancouver up 2-1. The Blues need to clam down and answer.
- The Blues really haven’t challenged a shaky looking Luongo. Time to get in his face.
- That was not the right answer…
- Demitra hits the post and it doesn’t go in. Great presence of mind by Conklin to keep it out. That needs to be the momentum changer to get the game going the Blues way.
- What a chance by Perron and McDonald. Gotta get that shot up Andy. Great chance by Steen as well.
- OSHIE SCORES!!! Great transition started by Johnson and Johnson gets it on ne…then Backes, Kariya, and TJ finish it off. Tied up 2-2.
- Blues have done a good job of absorbing early period pressure and then cranking up their pressure in the second half of the period.
- Big face off win by Backes on Sedin.
- Pathetic call sold by a Sedin. How can a ref make that call a hundred feet away when the ref 10 feet from the play didn’t call it? Sadly the Canucks score and its 3-2.
- The comedy of errors continue for the officials. Perron didn’t hit the Canuck, he just threw his head back. Very sad how bad officiating has bad this season. I know it’s a fast game, but it’s their job to do it right.
- Canucks seem content to sit back in the last few minutes of the third.
- Holy cow Erik Johnson. Blew past three Canucks and ripped it past Luongo, too bad it hit iron.
- The Blues try, but fail and fall to the Canucks thanks to the referees.
Game Recap
While the end result was not desirable, the Blues did skate well against the 4th best team in the West.
Oshie didn’t play his greatest game at Center, but he was effective. Backes ended up with Kariya and Oshie and played well.
The Tkachuk line was productive and created some of the Blues best chances. Berglund had an improved game. Winchester was virtually invisible.
Perron was solid offensively, but his defensive and neutral zone play with the puck is just not where it needs to be.
Conklin was easily the Blues player of the game stopping 31 of 34 shots on goal against.
The “penalties” called against the Blues ended up deciding the game. I know the players will say “we shouldn’t have been in that position”, but that’s not the point. The point is that refs need to be trusted to make consistent calls and they did not.
The Blues head off to Edmonton to a 8:30 pm Central start tomorrow. Detroit’s loss keeps the Blues 5 points back.
